I went off grid for 7 months to lose 10 stone – when I got home my family didn’t recognize me

A man has revealed how he lost 10 stone after going into the “desert and off the grid” where he adopted a strict diet and fitness regime.

Bryan O’Keeffe, 34, of Cork, Ireland, decided he needed to do something drastic after hitting 24st 2lbs in late 2021.

Having tried “all the fad diets and exercise fads” — and even gastric banding surgery — she knew she had to try something different.

The entrepreneur then spent seven months in Mallorca secretly transforming his body through diet and exercise.

But the move also saw him cut off communication with friends and family, before surprising them with his incredible transformation upon returning home.

For six straight months, Bryan maintained a calorie limit of 2,200, which he dropped to 1,750 a day for the last month, and exercised for about five hours a day.

On Instagram, she wrote, ‘So I decided to move into the wilderness and get off the grid where I could have no excuses.

“I called my friends and family and told them I wasn’t going to talk to them and got to work.”

In a later video, he can be seen showing off his new slim look to his loved ones, weighing 14 stone 5lbs.

He said: ‘In seven months, I’ve never taken a day off. I’ve lost count of the amount of injuries I’ve sustained, but I refused to stop and continued to train despite the pain.

“Every day, I just tried to do one more rep, one more length, one more mile, whatever I could do to get one percent better.”

He added: ‘It’s not easy. There are no shortcuts. She shows up every day, no matter what.’

Bryan – who started his challenge in late 2021 – explained how he started his weight loss adventure.

Bryan’s tips for losing weight

1) Prohibition of sitting during the day

2) Drink only water, perhaps with a squeeze of lemon

3) Don’t go on extreme diets: they are not sustainable

4) Track Consistently: It’s easy to forget to stop counting calories on the weekends

5) Count your drinks. A latte, for example, is often 150 calories. While cooking oil is also caloric

6) Don’t expect instant results

7) Enjoy the process. Don’t train to lose weight, train to get better at exercise

8) Keep your protein intake high – this will save muscle mass and reduce fat

He started with light exercise, walking about 90 minutes a day for the first two weeks. That turned into a more grueling five-hour day regimen.

He introduced weight lifting six days a week, swimming three times a week and running three times a week.

Just three months after his move to the Balearic island,Bryan, then 21 1/2 years old, ran his first 5km in just over half an hour.

Shortly after, weighing20 stone, Bryan completed a triathlon in one hour and 47 minutes.

She’s also slowly increased her running distance, running her first half marathon in July of this year.

Throughout his weight loss journey, Bryan tracked “everything,” including calories, steps, and sleep.

He also maintained a lower limit of 200g of protein per day.

At one point he wanted to give in and get a McDonald’s but didn’t bother as the closest was an hour’s drive away.

Bryan said: ‘It was months of absolute suffering. The first three months I could do nothing but eat, sleep and exercise.

“But after the fourth month, my body got used to the constant pounding and it wasn’t so bad.”

During the seven months, Bryan told only one person, his friend Colm Keenan, about his weight loss journey.

He called home twice a week to talk to his father who has Alzheimer’s disease when he knew his mother was away.

Bryan now works as a weight loss coach and regularly posts tips on Instagram and TikTok.

He also insists that he still eats carbs and would never have been able to stick to a diet that involved cutting them out.
